Befriending Barbie

I can't say I learned anything about Barbie from this other than distinctions of types of Barbies and their names. I can't say I had much of an opinion on Barbie before this, I guess I just saw Barbie as a doll, nothing more. I didn't pay attention to the fact that there were numerous different Barbies or that they had been around for so long. Reading this made me realize that collecting Barbies is a hobby, a true hobby. Then it reminded me of the definition of a hobby and it did this well. I can look at my life and things I do, Xbox is my Barbie. I have been playing video games since i was 6, and people think I am just some overskilled no life nerd for playing them. In reality video games are a hobby for me, they are the ability to get lost in something, to forget what is going on around me and to shrug off stress. This is what a hobby is, and sometimes people don't realize that there is more to what people do than what they are doing, a reminder that to someone, every action has meaning. I think the conversation with Judy is the most important part because it gives Barbies more meaning that molded plastic and nostalgia. I think the selection is well written and at times I can relate to it. I don't think this piece will effect how I write but it may cause me to be more empathetic.

  1. Donald, I really liked how you compared Barbie to your own hobby. It is so true that the women collecting the barbie dolls are just like everyone else with a hobby. In my post, I talked about how older women playing with Barbies was kind of weird and immature but after reading your post it makes more since to me. These women are trying to find something to do in their spare time when they just want to relax with friends, like you and your xbox.
