In The Last Stop, Cable tells us about one of his assumptions, which was how we would picture a funeral director to look like. I think that we all have that sort of image because TV shows and movies have planted that image into our head of what a funeral director looks like. Other assumptions were how the funeral home would look and how the funeral director feels about his work. I would hate to see people cry all the time but I am thankful that someone can do it, because I do understand the value of a burial. It’s a last goodbye that I would like to have if I have someone I love perish. I think it is interesting though that he managed to write a whole essay on death and not touch the afterlife debate, which is what a lot of people feel is the reason for a proper burial, as a sending off to their “heaven”.
I understood what Cable was saying throughout the whole essay and understood what he was feeling, the anxiety of touching or getting close to a person who has passed away would kind of freak me out to. This helped me realize that I can explain more than just the initial impressions but delve deeper and analyze everything I see, and no detail is too small.
