What struck out to me the most was how these videos were both a reflection and response the culture of 1983. In Girls Just Want to Have Fun it is protesting against the stereotype that women are confined to house work. In addition to showing that girls can break out of the kitchen, their outfits and behavior show them as very confident. Love is a Battlefield reflects "the experience of women in public space, the state of relationships between sexes, and the desire for closer contact with women." This is shown through the teenage girl going against her father's wishes and moving out and then resorting to prostitution. The video ends with a group of girls defeating the male ego. The point of the video is to show that women are powerful and willing to fight to prove that.
Love is a Battlefield has the strongest message simply because the video and overall message of the song are not what you think they would be. From just hearing it, it seems so innocent, as if a teenaged girl is talking about a summer fling she had. But when you watch the video, you question what love and why is it a battlefield. It's not the love you think it is, instead it is about the broken love between men and women.
The video I chose to analyze is Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer. The video shows that we need to protect the planet and save the earth. But it is not very encouraging. It is dull, dark and not hopeful or optimistic about the future. I basically says that we are "waiting" for the world to change instead of changing it ourselves. From watching and reading about theses videos, I understand that I need to know about how the song is a reflection and/or reaction to the culture.
