1983: The Female-Address Video

I never thought of the song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” as one of those songs that has a meaningful undertone until I read this article. What struck me as most interesting is that Cyndi Lauper used a former wrestler as her father figure in her video, because it makes more of a statement of how she is going to have fun now and not even this big man, that is her father, can stop her. Cyndi Lauper’s video had a stronger message to me, because she is in the face of her audience about how girls don’t want to be all grown up just yet they want to have fun too just like the boys get to do. She shows this by pushing the male figures around and being defiant to both of her parents. I’m writing my paper on Katy Perry’s “Thinking of You” video and I think she is portraying the hardships of a young woman, during the 50’s war era, had to go through when losing the love of her life to the war. Another thought is that she is comparing the innocents of true love and the meaninglessness of what is pure companionship, and nothing more, there is no love in that scenario. I think that these videos did help to start thinking about my own video in how I could look deeper into the video.
