The last TV show that I watched was Amazing Race. It is a show about teams traveling the world, and they race to win a million dollars. The show is all about adventure and new experiences. A lot of the commercials shown during the show are for airlines, cell phones, and sportswear such as Nike. People assume the audience watching likes adventure and travel, as well as having the appropriate wardrobe.
After reading this article, it really helped me know what to pin point when analyzing TV/video. The commercials that are present for a particular show are geared towards the type of audience the author thinks is watching. I thought it was interesting that when we watch commercials we "pay" for it. We can pay for it with our time, or actually physically buying the item advertised in the commercial. A key element when analyzing, is looking for what is missing in order to understand the flaws, instead of what is present. The camera angle, setting, and lighting also play a role in the message that is sent through a show/video. The type of clothes and people in the show effect the type of audience that is drawn to watch it. Using these tools, you can analyze any video, TV show, or movie. This article really helped me get ideas of what to look for when I start to analyze my video.

ReplyDeleteI thought this post was very well written and answered all the questions addressed. The points made about the commercials for the Amazing Race being directed towards people who travel and enjoy adventure is something I had never thought of before when thinking about the relationship between tv shows and their commercials. Also, we both made the agruement that when we watch tv we are paying for it with the commercials. We pay for it with our time and our actually money when we buy things that have been advertised.
